Comfort in the Scriptures

Recently death has visited our lives personally. The first time, with a cherished uncle who was a sufferer of Parkinson's, the second a close family friend, who was a cancer victim. Both men suffered many years with their illnesses.

In 1907 a doctor by the name of Duncan MacDougall conducted a series of observation experiments on terminally ill patients as they passed. The purpose of the exercise was to see if there was any noticeable and measurable weight loss after the death threshold. Since the conditions had to be just right, the selection of the patients and the environment had to be just so.

When you ask a Brit how they are doing, you are likely to get a understated but ever so polite “Fine Thank You”.

Ask the same question to an American fresh from the states and you are likely to get a “Fantastic” or “Never Better”.

When you asked a Czech in the past how they are doing, you were taking a big chance of actually opening an entire conversation about the status of the person’s job and family.

Road to Damascus

This week the British Government spoke loudly in saying that it will not support sending troops or operations going into Syria. Other traditional allies of the United States also took very conservative stances to the intervention into the civil war.

The civil war has been going on in Syria for more than two years now. The most recent push for intervention is a result of a second chemical attack on the civilian population. This one with Phosphor Gas Bombs and there are reportedly 1300 victims, in a suburb of Damascus.

How to talk to a non-believer (part 3): Science vs. Religion

Many non-believers point to science as an explanation for our Universe; our world, life on our planet and that there is no God. There is only Science.

In addressing this, I was reminded about an acquaintance that I met recently in business that wrote a book entitled Three Proofs that God Exists. In this book he has a quote that I love. “For the believer, no evidence is necessary. For the skeptic, no amount of evidence is sufficient.”

Introduction

St. Thomas Parish has begun the Year of Faith by calling for volunteers in the church to pray for the mission. To take it upon themselves to daily ask our Father for guidance and inspiration. To allow us to find a mechanism through which we will be able to raise the spirit of faith of our members, bring in new members, and lead us to individual and collective acts of charity.

Last week we started a discussion on how to talk to the non-believer. We outlined that a person without the upbringing and knowledge of history, the scriptures, or even advanced philosophical discussions might not be quite prepared to hear what it is you have to say.

When I first learnt I might come to the Czech Republic in 1994, I started researching what exactly I was getting myself into. When it came to religion, I discovered that 64% of the population was registered Roman Catholic, and then there was a footnote…. Most were non-practicing due to the 40+ years of imposed Socialism.
